A. Introduction

The rise of Islam in Southeast Asia revolutionized specific social institutions in the region. Islam as a politico-religious institution had triggered the modification and introduction of social institutions that shaped present day Southeast Asia. Among the most important developments was the introduction of the sultanate (a developed political and at the same time religion institution) to the region. For the purpose of this research, my study will focused on the development of the Sulu sultanate as part of the greater Malayan world and the eventual claim of the Philippines to Sabah (as the political successor at sovereignty of the Sulu Sultanate).
The objective of this study is to trace the historical and legal basis of the Philippine claim over the State of Sabah. The methodology of the study will be thematical not chronological. Instead of being conscious of the timeline, the study will concentrate on the major themes that shaped the sultanate’s Sabah dominion, lease and agreements with western world and the present claim of the Philippines to the Sabah State. The words “North Borneo,” “British Borneo” or “Sabah” are used interchangeably in the study. These words are used to that portion of the North Borneo Island to which the sultan of Sulu once ruled.
Available historical records seem to indicate that the dispute territory was a possession of the Sultan of Sulu which evidently was leased to the founders of a British chartered company. With protection of the crown guaranteed over the lease territory, later became the foundation British annexation and colonization. Eventually, Sabah was included in the federation of Malaysia.

Hi there my friend from Laguna,

I would like to suggest that we (enthusiasts of Philippine-Sabah Issue) need to formalized our stand by organizing a group or society as you would like to advance the study and to investigate the issue. By doing so we as a group can have a formalized voice to our government.

If you are amenable about this suggestion, I would try to encourage people here in the States to join us so that we can have a more international voice.

We can contact people from the academe and activist group to join us. I believed that by doing so we can make a change. How about that?

I like your suggestion. I've been waiting for this. Actually, i've done some actions like the cause i've made in Facebook named North Borneo Philippines. I also made a group also in Facebook regarding the Philippine claim to North Borneo(Sabah).

But i want more, like what you've said we need to have a collective and unified voice and stand regarding the Philippine claim to North Borneo(Sabah) Issue.

By the way, you can reach me at my email add. it's vin.nuevo@gmail.com

Thank you for your interest about this issue. I am happy that you are politically conscious about this important political debate.

It is an inconvenient truth for the Malaysian government that Sabah is more Filipino than Malaysian. This is because historically Sabah is part of the Philippines. We Filipinos and Sabahans shared a lot in terms of culture and social orientation.

I heard a lot of Sabahans wanted us very badly…both Muslims and Christians, they cannot tolerate the oppressive government of the peninsular Malaysia any more.

The issue of Sabah’s oil reserve is out of the Philippine interest, because historically in 1920’s, 1930’s as early as those years and at present we have a strong and continued claim over that part of our sovereignty.

NB:
Pls if you are interested in joining the society pls go to www.phil-sabah.org and contact the team leaders at the membership page for your account and active participation in the society’s online resources.

Thank you and hope to see you in our society.

To be truly fair, we the Brunei People Born in Sabah, before Sabah Joined Malaysia, are the true Owner of This Land,.The name Sabah also taken by Brunei Language (Sablah or Sebrang)mean other side or accros the Sea,we inherit this land from our forefather since 1200 A.D, Long before The Sulu exist.
